Motor City

Field service gave us a chance to see some of the suburbs of detroit. It's true you can definitely see how some parts of the city have suffered over the decades. Many of the homes which become empty or abandoned, are boarded up. Many houses which have been abandoned are knocked down, leaving conspicuously bare patches of grass around the neighbourhood.

However the people here are wonderful and is certainty true that is the people that make the place. Unfortunately, the literal fortunes of the city and its residents are closely tied to the automotive industry, with us ups and downs.

Having said that, it all makes for fascinating history. One landmark which really stood out for us was Michigan Central Station. Built in 1913, it is one of the most beautifully built buildings in the city but had experienced decline in use since the 50's until it was finally left unused in 1988. The building is literally a shell of itself. If you look at it from a distance, you can see straight through to the other side add all of its internals have been stripped.

We saw a ton of stuff in Thursday Thanks to Sherri :) Belle Isle, Geektown and of course the Motown Museum - the home of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Temptations and the Jackson 5 asking others. Amazing how so much great music, came out of one little house in Detroit.
