San Francisco Part 3 - The Rock

I told you there was alot of stuff in San Francisco!

Alan, Michelle, Brooke and Jacob were kind enough to take us out to Alcatraz Island. We caught a ferry from one of the piers from which you can get a very nice look of the city and bridge from the bay. Alcatraz itself has been immortalised in such films as Escape From Alcatraz and The Rock and also from some of its many infamous prisoners such as Al Capone and the Birdman. The close proximity from San Francisco was torture for the prisoners who could see, hear and sometimes even smell the freedom enjoyed just across the bay.

However we are soon informed by the friendly park ranger that the island has a much more varied and colourful history. Originally it was used as a military fort having perfect coverage of the bay area, particularly during the gold rush years. In 1969 a group of native indians took the island demanding reparations for broken treaties and land which was taken away from them. Now the island is a national park and serves as a sanctuary for many birds in the bay.

We took a walk down Pier 39 which is full of great stores to look around and heaps of restaurants. From the pier you can see Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge and some sea lions who make the surrounding areas their home. There is even a two story carousel if you want to go for a ride.

A crabby welcome :)

Food watch: Clam chowder for lunch again. Scrumptious.

We finished off the day with a nice dinner at Uncle Jun's. It was nice to have the family around to spend some time with them :)
